Where Belonging Meets Leadership: Fraternity and Sorority Life

“The fraternity and sorority community is funded by the students and the alumni who care. If you had a meaningful experience at UNL, this is a great way to show it and continue the traditions and important work being done.”

Fraternity and sorority life has a lasting impact on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln campus.

Many students join chapters for a variety of reasons, such as social connection, academics and leadership opportunities. For many, it becomes a steppingstone to blossoming into the best version of themselves.

“We want to cultivate chapters and councils who live their values … we ultimately want to create members who will develop and engage and positively impact both the UNL and the Nebraska community,” said Leigh Thiedeman, director of fraternity and sorority life.

This year, the FSL office is celebrating its 150th anniversary. FSL has been an integral part of the university since its founding, and it continues to grow to this day. Beyond friendships and leadership opportunities, fraternity and sorority life also has a significant role in student success and retention.

“If you’re in a fraternity or sorority, you’re more likely to be here from first year to second year,” Thiedeman said. “Our graduation rates are 20 points higher than the UNL average. If you can find your people on campus, you are more likely to succeed in college.”

Another benefit to being a member of a chapter is the opportunity to grow your network and create a lasting impact. Without these connections, students may struggle to find the confidence to take on leadership roles in their communities.

“You can be a leader immediately upon joining your organization … because almost one in four students on campus is a member of fraternity or sorority life, you’ll find a friendly face in nearly every recognized student organization or leadership position,” Thiedeman said. “One of the great parts about joining a fraternity or sorority is not that it changes you, but that it amplifies you.”

Through the Fraternity and Sorority Educational Fund, the number of learning opportunities can grow. The office of FSL can better support community and teach them how to grow further in their positions. In the past year, the FSL office was able to elevate its leadership retreats for members.

“Last year, we were able to bring in a new program called Launch … having that outside perspective challenged our leaders to think differently as a community,” Thiedeman said. “That was possible because of donor support.”

Because it supports the largest student communities on UNL’s campus, the impact of this fund reaches far and wide. Supporting the UNL Fraternity and Sorority Life Educational Fund is an investment in developing the next generation of leaders.

“The fraternity and sorority community is funded by the students and the alumni who care,” Thiedeman said. “If you had a meaningful experience at UNL, this is a great way to show it and continue the traditions and important work being done.”
