Ana Wombacher arrived at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln without a major in mind.

All she knew was that she wanted to pursue something where her imagination could run wild.

“I just knew I wanted to do something creative,” she said.

Wombacher was encouraged by her adviser to enroll in Principles of Mass Media, an introductory course offered through the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

The class quickly became one of her favorites. She joined the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) mentorship program and declared a double major in advertising and public relations and journalism.

Scholarship support played a critical role in making Wombacher’s journey possible. That is where support from the N Fund – College of Journalism and Mass Communications Scholarships made a meaningful difference in paying for college.

“The scholarship has really helped me be more flexible in my decisions,” Wombacher, now a senior, said. “It’s allowed me to pursue internships and leadership opportunities that are more career focused than a part-time job.”

That flexibility allowed Wombacher to serve two years on PRSSA’s executive board, eventually becoming vice president of professional development. In that position, she led the same mentorship program that once helped her choose her majors.

Rather than worrying about picking up extra shifts to cover expenses, Wombacher was able to invest her time in experiences that shaped her professional future.

She participated in an internship program created through a university partnership with the Foundry, a group that helps non-profits and small organizations. The program helps pair students with internships within the Lincoln community.

Today, you can find Wombacher interning at Nebraska Public Media, where she has received opportunities that align directly with her career goals.

Beyond professional growth, CoJMC gave Wombacher connection.

“I just know that when I walk into the J-School, I’ll see someone who brings a smile to my face. Whether it’s a professor, a classmate or someone in the (equipment) checkout room, it really feels like home.”

As she prepares to graduate in May, Wombacher plans to stay in Lincoln and pursue a full-time role in a creative-focused position. While she is still exploring her postgraduate plans, she feels confident in the foundation UNL has given her.

“Scholarships truly change lives,” she said. “They give students the ability to focus on learning, involvement and preparing for their careers. Financial support can benefit any student.”
