Ashley Gruber always knew she wanted to be in a career where she could be creative.

It wasn’t until a high school interior design class that her path truly came into focus.

“I got to learn the fundamentals of design and really dive deeper into that,” she said.

Now a freshman studying interior design at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Gruber is beginning her creative journey in the College of Architecture. The program’s studio environment challenges her to think conceptually, work with materials and spend hours refining projects that bring ideas to life.

That process requires more than creativity. It also requires time, dedication and a growing list of supplies.

“Going into it, you’re prepared for some things, but then there are so many little costs, such as art supplies, printing and materials for projects, that start to add up,” Gruber said.

Scholarship support through the N Fund – Architecture Scholarships has eased that pressure as Gruber navigates her first year in the program.

Donor support has allowed Gruber to focus more on coursework and studio projects rather than worrying about balancing additional work hours.

“If something comes up where I need to spend a big chunk of time on a project, it’s helpful not having to worry about work or finding a replacement for a shift,” she said.

Gruber has experienced the rewarding moments that come with learning the tools of the design profession. One of her favorite projects so far is from a computer applications course, where she created a digital building model using only photos and floor plans.

“At first it felt impossible, but once I started working through it, it became second nature,” she said. “It gave me a lot of confidence because I realized I knew what I was doing.”

For Gruber, scholarship support represents more than financial assistance. It is also a reminder that people beyond her immediate circle believe in her goals.

“I know I have friends and family supporting me, but having someone outside of my circle invest in my education is really impactful,” Gruber said.

That encouragement motivates her to continue pushing forward in a demanding program. Knowing someone believes in her work strengthens Gruber’s determination to succeed.

She hopes that donors understand that their support truly shapes students’ experiences.

“It really does make a difference in the lives of the students receiving support,” she said. “Not only financially but just knowing someone is there cheering you on.”
