‘Your generosity changes lives:’ College of Business seniors reflect on impact of scholarship support

“I am able to have such a fulfilling college experience because of wonderful donors whose support doesn't just fund tuition. It helps students pursue meaningful experiences, take on leadership roles and grow in ways that extend beyond the classroom,” Gianna Zitella, a senior actuarial science and finance major, said. “Your generosity changes lives, and I hope one day to pay it forward.”

N Fund - Business Start Something

The N Fund - Business Start Something provides general support, student scholarships, and immediate support to areas where students and faculty may need it most.

For College of Business seniors Madeline Splichal and Gianna Zitella, donor generosity made it possible to pursue their goals and to grow as scholars and business leaders.

“As a first-generation student from a blue-collar family, I was worried about the financial feasibility of an undergraduate degree. Through the generosity of donors, I was able to put my fear aside and focus entirely on my education,” said Splichal, an economics major from Lincoln.

Splichal joined the Nebraska Business Honors Academy, where she “found like-minded peers in a rigorous academic environment.” She also served on the college’s Student Advisory Board as marketing chair, secretary and president.

She conducted economic research alongside faculty in the Bureau of Business Research and gained hands-on experience managing more than $1 million as vice president of finance of her sorority and the University Program Council. She also secured internships in Omaha, Minneapolis and abroad in Japan.

“All of these experiences would not have been possible without the generosity of donors,” Splichal said. “I’m honored to thank all of you who are committed to creating a stronger, accessible and impactful future for business.”

Gianna Zitella, an actuarial science and finance major from Arlington Heights, Illinois, also found her path by exploring her passion for math found in elementary school. It led her to Nebraska’s actuarial science program, where she already passed two exams.

“As an out-of-state student, I didn’t know anyone, but being involved on campus and in the community allowed me to meet many amazing people,” she said. “Not only has the university helped me further my education, but it’s become my second home.”

Gianna Zitella is a senior actuarial science and finance major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Zitella volunteers at two local elementary schools, serves as a peer career coach in the Business Career Center and works as a teaching assistant in the statistics department.

Both Splichal and Zitella received scholarship support through the N Fund – Business Start Something. Thanks to donor support to the fund, the college can provide much needed support to priority areas such scholarship support.

“I am able to have such a fulfilling college experience because of wonderful donors whose support doesn’t just fund tuition. It helps students pursue meaningful experiences, take on leadership roles and grow in ways that extend beyond the classroom,” Zitella said. “Your generosity changes lives, and I hope one day to pay it forward.”
